Prior to the 20th century, before caps and visors gained mainstream popularity, every type of headgear was referred to as a hat. And the anatomy of a hat is a head cover with a crown, a band, and a brim.

The industrial revolution was a time of economy, and that translated in fashion as well as other aspects of life. Hemlines became shorter, hairstyles lost their pizzaz, and hats saw a reduction in the brim, this ushered in the cloche.

This frugality in fabric was due to the fact that the working class included women, for whom it was no longer practical to wear the ridiculously expansive, brimmed hat.

Enter caps and visors, and a host of other types of headwear, and a distinction was drawn between hats, caps, and visors.

hat is comprised of a crown, a band, and a brim

visor has a band, and a bill, but no crown or brim

cap has crown, which extends down to replace the band; it lacks a proper band, and has no brim; it has a bill instead
