“You have to command your space, no one will give it to you. And when you step confidenty, people will automatically move.”

I am an Argentine tango dancer. No, I am a dancer, period…..of all sorts. But tango is my love. I resided in Buenos Aires for 18 months just so I can perfect the dance.

During 2012, while in BA, I was dancing with a stately Russian fellow, and as we danced he said to me that he can feel that I sometimes dance hesitantly. I acknowledged that indeed, I am guarded because I did not want to be trampled by one of those 4 inches of steel heel that us women wear to dance. I explained that I had had enough trauma being stomped on by a male dancer a few years ago, during a Cha Cha dance party (took me months to recover).

He took a step back, looked at me with the quiet certitude of a guru and said “I am a martial arts instructor, and I will tell you the same thing I tell my students, you will get injured because you are afraid. You have to command your space, no one will give it to you. And when you step confidently, people will automatically move.”

I pondered that all the way home, and for days thereafter. I digested it, and began implementing it in my life. Now, I am unstoppable. Like magic, people clear a path when I dance…….and even when I walk!

I wish I could thank him, but it was a momentary encounter and I never saw him after that. I guess he was just the bearer of a message to me, a message that changed my life. I don’t even know his name, for such is the nature of the tango.
